Comparison
AI scheduling and Primavera P6: draft fast, control in P6
Published:
How an AI-drafted programme and Primavera P6 work together: what P6 does, what AI can draft from a BOQ, and how to review an XER before it becomes a baseline.
Facts about Primavera P6 come from Oracle’s documentation, read on 15 October 2026. CAIS is not affiliated with Oracle; Primavera is a trademark of Oracle.
Two different jobs
Primavera P6 is Oracle’s project scheduling software. Oracle’s documentation describes critical path method (CPM) scheduling and resource leveling, and many clients require contract programmes in P6. AI scheduling does something narrower: it drafts a first programme from the documents you already have, such as a BOQ, for a planner to refine.
What P6 is for
Oracle describes P6 Professional as a component of P6 EPPM that can also stand alone, and its import and export use the XER format for project, resource and role information.
- CPM scheduling, resource loading and leveling.
- Baselines and progress updates over the life of a project.
- Exchange in XER, the format many clients and consultants ask for.
What AI can draft from a BOQ
From a BOQ, AI can propose a work breakdown structure, group items into activities, estimate durations from quantities and stated outputs, and suggest logic. The CAIS AI Planning Master does this and exports Excel and XER files, with each assumption written down.
Review the XER before it becomes a baseline
A draft is a starting point, not a programme.
- Import it into a copy of the project, never straight over a live schedule.
- Check calendars, open ends and constraints.
- Check that each duration traces to a quantity and an output you accept.
- Schedule it in P6 and compare the finish date and the critical path with the draft.
The short answer
Not one or the other: draft quickly, then control in P6. The time saved is in the first draft; the judgement stays with the planner.
