Infrastructure quantity take-off, explained

What infrastructure quantity take-off covers

Infrastructure QTO measures civil works from site and utility drawings: earthworks, roads, drainage, sewerage, water and stormwater networks, telecom and gas routes, landscape and site works. CAIS reads PDF drawings, works across plans, long sections, cross-sections and schedules, and returns a 12-section Excel BOQ with pipe and manhole quantities, cut and fill volumes and a project summary.

QTO in CAIS is experimental. Volumes and lengths are drafts until an engineer or quantity surveyor has checked them against the levels, sections and schedules.

Prepare the drawings before you upload

Civil quantities depend on sections and levels as much as on plans.

  • Upload each plan with its long sections and cross-sections: lengths come from plans, depths and widths from sections.
  • Include manhole, pipe and valve schedules. They are more reliable than reading each label on a plan.
  • Make sure chainages and the level datum are shown. A volume cannot be checked without them.
  • Use the current revision and leave superseded sheets out of the upload.

How to review the output

Check the items that move the total most: earthwork volumes, pavement layers and the main pipe runs. Recalculate a sample of cut and fill between two cross-sections by the average end area method, and compare pipe lengths with the chainages on the long section.

  • Confirm that manholes and chambers are counted once, against the schedule.
  • Check pipe diameters and materials against the specification, not only the plan labels.
  • Keep a record of each adjustment with the drawing and chainage it relates to.

Questions about infrastructure QTO

Which drawings work best?
Site plans, road and utility plans, long sections, cross-sections and schedules, in PDF.
Does it calculate cut and fill?
The BOQ includes cut and fill and earthwork volumes read from the drawings. Check them against the levels and sections before relying on them.
Does it price the BOQ?
No. Price the reviewed BOQ with the AI Pricing Master or with your own rates.
Is the output ready for a tender?
Not without review. It is experimental and needs checking by a qualified engineer or quantity surveyor.
